Release Notes for the SMC1211 This document contains information about the SMC1211, and is not intended as a substitute for the manual that accompanies the SMC1211. However, it will provide supplemental information in an abbreviated form for a speedy installation process. We urge you to read the full manual in conjunction with this document to gain a complete understanding of the product. This document addresses the following topics: 1. System Requirements 2. Software Installation 3. Selecting Open Transport (AppleTalk Control Panel) 4. Setting up the TCP/IP 1. System Requirements Basic requirements 1. Mac OS compatible computer with available PCI slot 2. System 7.5.2 or higher 3. Open Transport 1.1.1 or higher Recommendations for optimal performance 1. Mac OS version 8.1 or higher 2. Open Transport version 1.3 or higher 3. AppleShare Client version 3.8 or higher 4. Install the PCI Ethernet Card in the slot closest to the CPU. 5. The only driver in the Extensions Folder should be the driver used to run the active card. (The Apple Built-in Ethernet Driver, Apple 10/100 Driver, and Apple CS II Driver should be disabled, as well as any other third-party cards). 6. Use the TCP/IP protocol. AppleShare IP 6.0 offers such connections. 2. Software Installation 1. Insert the FastEther Ethernet adapter diskette into the floppy drive. 2. Double-click the Installer icon. The Install dialog box will appear. 3. Click the "OK" button. The version of MacOS dialog box will appear and then click the appropriate button for your MacOS to installs the appropriate driver. 4. Click the "Restart" button after installation is complete. 5. Power Macintosh will restart. (Note: After installing the adapter and the driver, you will need to configure the AppleTalk control panels on the Macintosh computer). 3. Selecting the Ethernet Card in the AppleTalk Control Panel 1. Select "Control Panels" from the Apple Menu. 2. Select "AppleTalk" from the Control Panels submenu. The AppleTalk control panel will appear. 3. Click the "Connect via:" dropdown list box showing available communication connections. 4. Select the Ethernet slot where the adapter is installed. 5. Close the AppleTalk control panel by clicking on the close box. A dialog box appears asking whether you want to save changes. 6. Click "Save." 7. Installation is complete. 4.Setting up TCP/IP (Note: To use the SMC Ethernet card for TCP/IP communications, you must first select our Ethernet Card in the TCP/IP control panel). 1. Select "Control Panels" from the Apple Menu. 2. Select "TCP/IP" from the Control Panels submenu. The AppleTalk control panel will appear. 3. Click the "Connect via:" dropdown list box showing available communication connections. 4. Select the Ethernet slot where the adapter is installed. 5. Close the TCP/IP control panel by clicking on the close box. A dialog box appears asking whether you want to save changes. 6. Click "Save." 7.
