Mac OS X Installation

The Mac OS X 10.1 installer supports Kyocera Mita Digital Copiers and Printers. The Mac OS X Print architecture introduces Print Center, discarding the Chooser and Desktop Printing used in Mac OS 8.X and 9.X and remaining in the Mac OS X Classic environment.

Mac OS X Installer Components

FS-Series and KM-Series PPD (Postscript Printer Description) files are text files with keywords that describe printer features, options and settings. The Installer places them in localized folders in /Libraries/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/. Once installed, they can be selected within the Print Center to provide complete support for each model printer.

ColorSync Profiles tell the Macintosh how to create the best quality color for the Kyocera Mita color devices. The profiles are stored in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles

TrueType Screen Fonts enable the fonts on screen to match the printer's resident fonts. Two separate install font groups (Agfa and Bitstream) are included in the Installer. All installed fonts will be stored in Library/Fonts/.

Using the Installer

The Kyocera Mita Printer Macintosh Installer presents a Software License Agreement which you must agree to before proceeding with the installation. The installer opens to a Custom Installation which lists groups of printers, PPDs, and fonts. Custom Install enables the user to select a desired subset of the total Kyocera Mita Macintosh Installer support.

To select printer and font support, highlight the desired printer then use the command-click sequence to select the fonts at the bottom of the list.

Select the Easy Install option to run an installation of all Kyocera Mita PPD files.

At the end of the installation, you can choose to quit or continue which will loop back into the install menu.

Selecting the Printer within Mac OS X

Print Center within MAC OS X enables the user to locate, select and configure the available printers. Once the installer has finished, Print Center will be the first stop toward full installation.

To install the printer, follow these steps:

  1. Open Print Center within the MAC OS X at Applications/Utilities/

  2. Click on Add Printer

  3. Select one of the three available connections: AppleTalk, LPR using IP, and USB.
  4. For a USB printer, a list of available USB connected printers will appear. Note: the printer must be connected and turned on to appear on the list.

For an LPR printer, the printer must be turned on, connected to the network and assigned an IP address. Enter the IP address of the printer and select a PPD for the desired printer under the Printer Model menu. This printer will appear as an lpr host printer on the Printer List.

For an AppleTalk printer (connected via a network card), the printer must be turned on and connected to the AppleTalk network. Select the appropriate AppleTalk zone. The printer will appear as a LaserWriter printer on the Printer List.

  5. Select the printer and click Add.

Kyocera Printer Setup Utility

In Macintosh OS 9.X, the Kyocera Printer Setup Utility configures the KPDL setting for Kyocera Mita printers connected via USB or AppleTalk. Macintosh users must change the default PCL printer emulation to KPDL for printing support in the Mac environment. When invoking the Kyocera Mita Macintosh Installer, the utility changes the emulation for all USB connected printers and installs itself on the Macintosh desktop. After installation, the utility can be used to set KPDL for Kyocera Mita printers connected via AppleTalk or to set-up a newly connected Kyocera Mita USB printer.

When used as a standalone utility, all AppleTalk and USB connected Kyocera Mita printers can be selected in a tree view display. When an AppleTalk connected printer is selected, then the Printers Name and AppleTalk Zone will be displayed. For USB printers, only the printer name is displayed.

Mac OS 8 and 9

The Kyocera Mita Macintosh Installer supports Macintosh OS versions 8.X and 9.X. It installs Postscript Printer Description (PPD) files, TrueType fonts, a readme document and color profiles into the MAC OS.

Kyocera Mita printer support can be instituted within the Macintosh OS in two ways: through the Chooser or through the Desktop Printing Utility. Ethernet or AppleTalk connected printers require using the Chooser in the Apple menu. USB connected printers (USB to Parallel) use the Desktop Printing Utility to install and require Mac OS 8.6 or higher. To successfully print in a Macintosh environment, the user must set the printer default emulation to KPDL or KPDL (Auto) mode as specified in the following section.

Installer components

Kyocera Mita FS-Series PPD files are installed in the Printer Descriptions folder in the System folder. When the LaserWriter Driver accesses the Kyocera Mita PPD files, it proves support for model specific features like paper handling and hard disk options, fonts, resolution, bar codes, paper sizes, stapling, and collation. Apple Computer includes a version of the LaserWriter Driver with each Macintosh operating system.

ColorSync Profiles add support for Kyocera Mita Color laserprinters, placing them into the ColorSync folder.

TrueType Screen Fonts include two sets of Kyocera Mita, model dependent screen fonts.

Selecting your Emulation Mode at the Printer’s Front Control Panel

Because Kyocera Mita printers use a factory default PCL emulation, Macintosh users must change the emulation on the printer before using the printer for the first time. To change the printer's emulation, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Mode button on the Printer’s Front Control Panel.
  2. Use the plus (+) and minus (-) keys to display Interface.
  3. Press the Enter key and use the plus (+) and minus (-) keys to display the interface port (Parallel, Serial or Option) to which your Macintosh computer is connected.
  4. Press the Enter key to accept the displayed interface.
  5. Use the plus (+) and minus (-) keys to display Emulation.
  6. Press the Enter key and use the plus and minus keys to display KPDL for PostScript only environments or KPDL (Auto) for printer environments requiring both PCL and PostScript.
  7. Press the Enter key to accept the displayed Emulation.

Selecting your Kyocera Model with the Chooser

The Kyocera Mita Macintosh Installer places all PPDs in the Printer Descriptions folder then restarts the system. Follow these steps to complete the Kyocera Mita PPD installation:

  1. Open the Chooser in the Apple Menu.
  2. Select the appropriate AppleTalk Zone. Your network administrator will establish these zones and should be consulted for more information.
  3. In the upper lefthand box, scroll down to and select the LaserWriter 8 driver.
  4. In the Select a PostScript Printer box, highlight the FS-Series model you want to print to then click the Create button.
  5. The LaserWriter Driver will Autodetect the PPD in the Printer Descriptions folder and build a desktop printer using this PPD. Select Setup…
  6. Verify that the Selected Printer Description file matches the printer you have selected. If there is a mismatch, choose the "Select PPD…" button to open the Printer Descriptions folder where the appropriate PPD can be selected.
  7. If the Selected Printer Description file matches, then select the Configure button to make settings for the following: Optional Paper Feeders, Duplex Unit, Envelope Feeder, Stacker, Sorter, Document Finisher, Printer Memory and Optional Disk selections for Hard Disk and RAM Disk.

Installing TrueType Screen Fonts

The Kyocera Mita Macintosh Installer includes two TrueType Screen font packages. These model specific screen fonts match with printer fonts to insure a proper display in WYSIWYG format. The Kyocera Mita Macintosh installer, offer both a PPD package and a font package that can be selected by holding down the Command key and using the mouse to select more than one package. The packages have been separated because the printer supports only one type or another and users may choose not to crowd their Fonts folder with TrueType screen fonts that do not match the printer fonts. The Bitstream font package with ten TrueType typefaces supports the older Kyocera Mita printers while the AGFA font package with 80 TrueType fonts for current Kyocera Mita printers. Model support appears as follows:

Using the Macintosh USB Port with Kyocera Mita Printers

Macintosh users with USB ports can print to a Kyocera or a Kyocera Mita printer through a USB cable to the USB printer port or a USB-to-Parallel cable connected to the printer's parallel port. The Macintosh Operating System must be version 8.6 or higher. Unlike other Macintosh printer installations, the printer is selected through the Desktop Printing Utility provided with the Macintosh OS. The result is a new desktop printer icon for your printer. This USB connected printer will not appear in the Chooser but can be selected within the LaserWriter Driver.

In addition to connecting the cable, the user must use the Kyocera Mita Macintosh Installer to properly install PPD support for Kyocera Mita printers. The LaserWriter Driver uses the PPD to access all printer features and options specific to the printer model.

To install a Kyocera Mita printer for USB-to-Parallel printing, follow these steps:

  1. Install a Macintosh OS version of 8.6 or higher.
  2. Attach a Macintosh compliant USB-to-Parallel cable.
  3. Run the Kyocera Mita Macintosh Installer to install the appropriate Kyocera Mita PPD files.
  4. Locate and open the Apple Extras folder on your hard disk (installed with the Operating System) then open the Apple LaserWriter Software folder.
  5. Open the Desktop Printing Utility, choose the LaserWriter 8 and select Printer (USB), click OK.
  6. Under the USB Printer Selection, click Change.
  7. In the USB Printer window, select your Kyocera Mita model and click OK.
  8. Under PostScript Printer Description File, select Auto Setup or Change. With Auto Setup, the operating system will query the printer then attempt to find the appropriate PPD file. Within the Change selection, the Printer Descriptions folder will be accessed where you can choose your model (each model is designated with KCXXXX where the XXXX represents the Kyocera Mita model number). After highlighting your model, choose Select.
  9. With the PPD and the printer properly selected, choose Create, then name your printer as it will appear on the desktop. The selected PPD file will be associated with the desktop printer. When printing with the LaserWriter driver, choose Printer: in the upper left corner of the print screen and select your USB connected printer.
